Last Christmas my older sister bought me the book “The Highest Tide” by author Jim Lynch. I was not sure if I would like the book because the type of genre it was and because I was use to reading books that were Fantasy or that were Mythical.
After skimming through the seven or so books that I received for Christmas from my family I decided to read the Highest Tide first.
The book is about a young boy named Miles O’Malley who lives in northwestern Washington by the tidal flats in a place called Puget Sound. Miles O’Malley is a boy who is fascinated with exotic ocean life. With both parents constantly working or fighting Miles O’Malley does not have much of a relation ship with his parents and is usually home alone. To keep himself occupied Miles is constantly exploring the ocean in his small kayak, reading and learning about the ocean or he is taking care of his elderly friend.
One night when Miles O’Malley was exploring the beach he discovered a sea creature that had washed up on the shore and was stranded in the mud. Miles unaware of what this creature was calls upon a professor to help him figure out what the creature was. Miles O’Malley’s discovery of this exotic sea creature led to many questions and when Miles O’Malley discovers another exotic sea creature and it gets broadcasted for a second time Miles mother and Father both start to get concerned and they separate. Miles takes his parents separation hard and looks for support in his friend and ex babysitter. But when he goes to her house for support and finds out that he can not talk to her because she was over dosing on drugs he is left to feel alone. Miles confused about the separation of his parents and the condition of his older friend and “crush” and overwhelmed about the publicity that he is receiving has to try to bring his family back together and save his friends life.
Jim Lynch who currently lives in Olympia has written several award winning novels and has been published in many magazines. His book the Highest Tide is definitely a must read. The Highest Tide was published in 2005 and has been published and translated 20 other times in other countries.

This description has intrigued me. I will have to check this author out. Good job!
